Useful Information On Vacations In South Uist, Highlands & Islands

The Isle of South Uist is situated in the group of islands known as the Outer Hebrides (and also the Western Isles of Scotland. The inhabited islands are Isle of Harris, South Uist, North Uist, Lewis, Eriskay, Barra and Benbecula plus numerous other islands which are only inhabited by wildlife and sheep. In the article below I talk about the Isle of South Uist and describe why this is such a superb place to visit, also I suggest some South Uist accommodation.

The islands of the Hebrides are unique, they have totally unique species of flora & fauna in a spectacular countryside with some of the most dramatic coastal areas in the United Kingdom of Great Britain. The Hebridean culture is an interesting mix of Gaelic, Celtic and Norse influences, which could also be said to be unique.

On South Uist, particularly in the western parts, you will find the most beautiful beaches of sand and behind these large patches land called machair. Machair is only found in this part of the world, it is a kind of immensely fertile, meadow which is blanketed in wildflowers in spring and summer. Many folk believe that the beaches found on South Uist are the best in the country, the UK, and even Europe.

The island is also a fantastic venue to indulge in golf. Askernish Golf Course is the oldest golf course to be found in the Outer Hebrides and it was designed by Old Tom Morris (the designer of St Andrews' Old Course) and countless others in Scotland. Unfortunately the course was damaged and it needs a great deal of attention before it can be played upon but you will find many other places to play golf across the islands.
Of course the island of South Uist offers masses of opportunities to enjoy a vast array of sports. Water sports such as surfing are incredibly popular and nearly everybody can enjoy a little rambling. Besides golf the most popular sport is still fishing though more cyclists appear annually.

Even though the island of South Uist doesn't feature a superior amount of museums and galleries it has sufficient to keep you busy if it rains. Museums like Kildonan Museum feature exhibitions about local life and its association with Flora MacDonald and Bonnie Prince Charlie (Charles Edward Stuart).

Places To Stay On South Uist

Polochar Inn is located in the town of Lochboisdale in the southerly region of the island. This is a 4 star rated hotel on South Uist which looks out over to Barra and Eriskay. All rooms are en-suite and they also have WiFi internet access.

South Uist self catering accommodation is excellent for small groups and families. 10 Bun A Mhullin is a spacious self catering traditional cottage/house on the Isle of Eriskay which is attached to South Uist via a small bridge.
